Schools OutIt’s that time of year again when many school aged children will be at home alone during the day when mom and dad are at work.  Here are a few things you can do ahead of time to make sure they can handle themselves:

1)      Make up a small first aid kit where they can get to it with different sizes of bandages and an antibiotic ointment for the minor cuts & scrapes.

2)      Make a list of important phone numbers they may need and keep it visible near the telephone. Include numbers such as parents work numbers, a close relative or neighbor they can call in emergencies, and don’t forget to include 911.

3)      Show them where the water main shut off valve is just in case the washer or toilet starts to leak. Show them how to use it. You can even tie a bright colored ribbon on the handle as a reminder for anyone where it is.

4)      Remind them to keep main doors and screens locked.

5)      Review with them, especially the younger children, about stranger danger and how you cannot tell if someone is bad just by looking at them.

6)      Remind them to NEVER tell anyone that you are not at home. They can always tell a caller you are outside or in the shower.

7)      In case of a thunderstorm or power outage, check with a neighbor to see if your child can stay at their home until you return from work.

8)      Go over emergency plans with them so they know what to do in each situation.

9)      Lock liquor cabinets.

Hopefully all of the above will remain as safety suggestions that won’t need to be used.  The entire staff at Insurance Planning Service wishes a fun and safe summer vacation for all the kids!
